Introduction

Looking to the future
Following in the footsteps of a long tradition, recycling professionals have begun the 21st century with a strong and confident approach, and have invested considerable effort into the major economic boom triggered by the newly-industrialised countries. The economic crisis may have slowed the momentum, but these professionals remain resolutely focused on the future. They are aware that in a world where resources and energy-saving measures are increasing in demand, the Nouvelles Matières Premières (new raw materials) will occupy a fundamental role over the coming years. This concept forms the basis for the second Nouvelles Matières Premières (NMP) trade fair, which is being held in Marseilles on 10 and 11 June 2010. Today, owing to the sheer determination of the professionals and policymakers (aiming for a European Recycling Society) recycled raw materials may finally no longer be branded as waste. At the centre of this is a sea change in perceptions of our industry. The rebranding of Nouvelles Matières Premières (new raw materials) will also constitute an important step on the path towards quality standardization, which would make them available to a wider market. Standardization would allow recycled material to be freely traded, just like any other product. The choice of Marseille as the venue for our next fair is no coincidence. The Phocaean capital opens onto the Mediterranean Basin, which is one of the main regions for trade in recycled raw materials. Trade will receive a further boost from the recently formed Union for the Mediterranean, particularly in the area of recycling knowledge and technology transfer. Marseilles will bring an international dimension to Nouvelles Matières Premières which will extend the event's influence overseas. Following in the success of the first Nouvelles Matières Premières symposium, we are confident that the new gathering will only serve to confirm the importance of holding a dedicated event for the recycling industry. We hope that all of those involved in the future of the industry will attend.
